Event Details
#digpen III - The Digital Peninsula's Third Web Unconference.
Saturday 11th June
University College Falmouth, Tremough Campus
Penryn, Cornwall TR10 9EZ
Cost: FREE!!!
Parking and detailed map of venue (with notes): http://bit.ly/mjy47k
Following the success of #digpen I (photos here) at the University of Plymouth in March, and then #digpen II at Exeter Phoenix in May (photos here, more photos here, and videos here), #digpen will be making that all important trip to Cornwall. We will be sharing our thoughts and visions for a strong and effective web development community in the South West, with an emphasis on collaboration. Won't you join us? The last two were fab. This one is going to be even better.
The format of the day, will probably be as follows (we will list the speakers here before the event):
10.30 - 11.00 session - Agile discussion
Mark Glover (a web developer with no experience of Agile) together with help from the audience, will be questioning a panel made up of Agile pros Glenn McWhinney (Agile.co), Nic Pillinger (agilex), Toby Parkins (UKNetWeb), plus Agile relative newbie Dan Barber (Abiquo), to find out what Agile is and whether it could be of benefit to web developers.
11.00 - 11.30 session - #digpen community projects: 1. website, 2. shopify
Two community projects are about to be launched, and we want you to get involved. The first, the #digpen website, is being overseen by Sophie Dennis (Cayenne), and the second, a #digpen shopify project, is being overseen by Glenn McWhinney (Agile.co). Come and give your thoughts on what we should and shouldn't be doing, find out about an upcoming community hack jam kind of day up on Dartmoor, and then if you are feeling daring, commit.
11.30 - 12.00 session - an introduction to nosql and CouchDB
Following discussion regarding noqsl in our LinkedIn forum, we have invited developer Gavin Cooper (magicseaweed) to share his first hand experiences.
12.00 - 13.00 buffet lunch
If you would like to join us for the buffet it costs £5 a head, payable on the day, or alternatively you can bring your own packed lunch. Please can you email frankie@medworm.com if you would like to join us for the buffet as we need to confirm numbers beforehand.
13.00 - 14.00 session - lightning talks & spotlight presentations
The purpose of the lightning talks is for us all to get to know each other. Each #digpen we invite a number of different developers from around the community to introduce themselves. It is really important that we all have the opportunity to get to know each other, and also to get a chance to try our hand at presenting within a friendly local environment. If you fancy a go drop frankie@medworm.com an email (if we can't squeeze you in this time we can always put you on the list for the next event). We'll also be having a couple of spotlight presentations where we can look in more depth at what a few people are doing and ask them a couple of questions.
Confirmed speakers (so far) are as follows:
Lightning talks:
David Bone (ExportCornwall)
Iain Lobb (iainlobb.com)
Pascal Raabe (The Open Design School)
Anthony Graves (Business Web Solutions)
Matt Sephton (gingerbeardman)
Mark Peberdy (Leapfrog Digital Media)
Spotlight:
Andrea Lilley
Dan Parker (firetext)
14.00 - 14.15 session - #digpen direction - presentation
Frankie Dolan (MedWorm) will give an update on the #digpen community - the story so far, the objective, and the vision that has been forthcoming. She will talk through some practical aspects of building a development community, before handing #digpen's future over to the community to carry forward should they wish.
14.15 - 14.45 break
Kat Smith and Matt Connelly from Iteracy have very kindly agreed to pay for everyone's first cuppa - as a thank-you to #digpen for helping them find people to work with! If you want another drink them you can buy your own :)
14.45 - 15.10 session - #digpen direction - shared experiences & discussion
Following on from the #digpen presentation, Frankie will invite the audience to share experiences on how #digpen has already started to have a positive impact on work, and will encourage discussion on what we can now do in the South West to form a strong and effective collaborative development community.
15.10 - 15.40 session - impromptu
Here's your chance to grab a 5 minute slot to share information about any interesting stuff you've been working on recently. We'll stick up a list somewhere prominent for you to add your name to during the day if you decide you'd like to talk about something - anything at all that you think would be interesting for us to hear about!
15.40 - 16.00 session - 2 min event pitches, workshop requests & feedback
If you didn't want a whole 5 minutes to talk, but want to tell us very quickly about something, like an event you think people should go to, or a position you are trying to fill, or a project you want people to get involved in, then get up and give us your 2 minute pitch. After that we'll discuss what kind of workshops people would like us to run/be happy to run in the future, and get your feedback on the day - good and bad please.
16.30 - BBQ on Maenporth Beach (weather permitting)
If you have the time, and the weather is good, then head straight down to Maenporth Beach for BBQ afterwards. Bring food and drink supplies to share if you can. Even better, bring your cayak if you like - and the family, you are all welcome! Please share your car with anyone without.
Frankie has decided it time to take a little step back since it is important that this is not a one person show, and has asked Peter Graves (Channel Commputing) to be the MC of the day (without whom this event would not be taking place, thank-you Peter!)
Previous events have been slack on timings, but this event will be run strictly to time (sorry won't be waiting for people who are late this time).
For any further information please contact frankie@medworm.com
If you can't make the full day, then you are encouraged to come to the afternoon, as the morning will consist of optional workshops.
We would like to encourage those who are able, to stay in Falmouth for the weekend and make the most of this opportunity. Why not bring the family for a short break? Or you might want to meet up with some of the #digpen geeks outside the conference? Maybe join us at our BBQ on the beach?
Anyone that wants to camp, you might like to stay here (they also have a self-catering lodge with family rooms available): http://www.tregednafarmholidays.co.uk/
If you prefer your home comforts then best to book a B&B or hotel in Falmouth centre so it is easy to meet up with the others. There's lots of choice to be found here: http://www.visitfalmouth.com/
If you can't make this one, too bad, but make sure to sign-up for the #digpen newsletter so you don't miss #digpen IV
